Dad spends his time searching for historic sports reporting
Dear Live Grand:
My dad was a sports reporter who later changed jobs, but his passion remains sports history. He's in assisted living and enjoys the social aspects, but even then, he’s happiest when he’s immersed in sports events and heroes from the past. Which is the problem. We set his radio to the one sports station that he likes but if he touches the wrong button, the radio gets messed up. Sports TV is about current games which don't interest him. He can’t use a computer without problems. My friends bought a GrandPad for their mother and she loves it. Does it sound like Dad’s life could be improved with a GrandPad? - LR
Dear LR:
We’re always happy to hear when people love their GrandPads (which we do a lot!). Your friends are on target about it being a good tool for your dad, as well. We find that using one of these tablets extends independence because older adults can benefit from the great things that technology has to offer in a risk-free environment.
The safe access Internet and the ability of the family to control what’s allowed would keep your dad from getting out of his depth. Since the tablet has built-in cellular service there’s no need for Internet access so he wouldn’t have to depend on the stability of the facility’s connection. There’s a super selection of built-in apps, too.
GrandPad’s safe access to YouTube would allow your dad to watch sports history videos to his heart’s content. The family admin would set up the access for this and any other sites they feel he’d enjoy.
With a GrandPad, he wouldn’t have problems with finding his preferred radio stations either. There’s an ESPN station pre-set, and the family admin could add your dad’s local stations or even stations from around the country. To keep the page streamlined, the admin could hide the pre-sets your dad doesn’t want. That way, he’d just touch the radio app and the options he sees would be his favorites.
What’s more, he’d have easy access to the Sports History option under the Articles app. He can add articles to his favorites list to read or re-read later. For general history, there is Weekly History, Today in History, and Media History. The Lookup App has an encyclopedia option so he could read about sports or other historical figures by simply searching topics or names.
We think he’d enjoy Radio Recliner, a station where the DJs are all in retirement living situations. Then there’s GrandPad Radio for music and talk. For music alone, he could choose country, rock, or classical. If he likes games, there’s a super selection of card games, word games, and memory challenges.
A GrandPad could provide an enormous boost for your dad, LR. He’d be able to easily engage in family chats, view photos, and indulge himself in his favorite pastime - sports. We’re certain that he’d be as happy with his GrandPad as your friends’ mom is with hers.
