Husband with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease wants his own tablet
Dear Live Grand:
My husband, 67, lives with early-onset dementia. Over time, he’s becoming increasingly confused by his smartphone and tablet. He says he’s done with them, but then he sees me using my devices, so of course, he wants his own. I’m hoping to find a tablet that he could use with reasonable confidence while I’m busy working. He enjoys word games and music from the 80s, and he’d like to use the Internet, if possible. Would a GrandPad be a good fit for someone like him? – NM
Dear NM:
We’re sorry your husband faces such a tough diagnosis. He’s fortunate to have a partner by his side who’s so determined to help him maintain his independence. Would a GrandPad help you do that? We believe that it would.
Since your husband would like to go back to using the Internet, let’s start with that. Within the GrandPad Internet app, he’d find preset options such as a general search button, NPR, and Wikipedia. This is just a start, though. You as the family admin would be able to add his favorite websites including YouTube, or sports and hobby sites. Then, if you notice his judgment declining at some point, you could remove options that may present a risk.
The Games app offers plenty of entertainment and challenges for him. He could play Blackjack, Slots, Texas Hold’em, or word games. The memory game provides a choice of difficulty levels and is great for the brain.
He'd love the Music app with its 80s option, but the app also provides genre choices such as country, rock, or jazz. He could even build his own Music Collection just by tapping a button.
Video calls are intuitive. You’d upload the contact information of friends and family. When they called him, he’d see their image on the screen and touch Answer. To call, he’d just choose the person’s image and press Call. This may seem too simple for his needs now, but once in place, he’d love how easy it is. No worries about him becoming embroiled in a scam either since only the people in his Contacts can call or email him.
He could enjoy Zoom calls with his friends or former colleagues, as well. GrandPad’s designated Zoom app makes the process easy.
The Radio app includes preset radio stations that focus on different genres of music and talk, but additional stations could be added based on his interests.
Should he forget how to play a game, or simply have a question about how something works, he’d just tap the prominent HELP button. GrandPad’s unmatched customer support provides live assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year!
Superior onboarding support is offered for both of you so that you can learn to use the GrandPad features that would enhance your husband’s independence while you focus on your work.
You two are a solid team, NM. You’ll face the challenges ahead together with imagination and courage. We’re cheering you on!
