Proactive grandma wants a safe device that still offers multiple features

Dear Live Grand:

I’m a 78-year-old grandmother who is reasonably computer literate, however lately I’ve been finding them irritating. This is probably because my memory and eyesight are both less reliable than in the past. I believe in being proactive so I’m preparing myself as well as my family for my future. With this in mind, I recently moved to a retirement facility that can provide more care as needed. There are plenty of opportunities for socialization here but I also want to continue to challenge and entertain myself online. What I’d like to know is could this device provide me with adult-level options without the frustration and risk of computers and ordinary tablets? – AW

Dear AW:

While we all should do some realistic planning as we age, not everyone is as clear-sighted and determined as you. You’re a true inspiration!

The GrandPad tablet is uniquely designed for older adults so it would provide you with a safe method of challenging and entertaining yourself even as it relies less on memory and sharp eyesight. Should hearing become an issue, we’ve got that covered, too.

The size of the tablet’s screen and lack of confusing (and irritating!) clutter are vital components. Large icons in unique colors, as well as front-facing speakers, help make the user’s experience more comfortable. Scams and viruses aren’t an issue because you’d be going online via GrandPad’s safe Internet.

Speaking of spammers and viruses, your only emails and calls would come from contacts who have been added by your family admin so you’re in control. Should you need assistance with your GrandPad you’d simply tap the HELP icon and your own dedicated representative would answer.

You’d love the safe Internet app where you could use YouTube, research with Search and Wikipedia, and enjoy articles and podcasts on Growing Bolder, AARP, and Next Avenue. The family admin can also add your favorite websites so you could go to them easily without having to risk misdirection.

If you enjoy playing bridge, working crosswords, or playing memory games, these and other game choices are there waiting for you. In fact, we think that the memory game feature that allows you to choose your own level of play might be right up your alley.

Music choices range from classical to country, religious to rock and roll, R&B to relaxation. You could easily build your own playlist so if you’d like to listen to music while you work crossword puzzles, you’d just choose Play Music in Background.

The Radio app has great pre-sets like GrandPad Radio for music and talk and Radio Recliner with DJs who’ve found a new purpose in their retirement.  The family admin can add any additional stations that you might already enjoy.

There’s a toolbox that holds a flashlight, a magnifier, and a calculator, and the Moods app is wonderful for just relaxing.

GrandPad’s are incredibly versatile, AW, so you’ll be able to use it now for all of your interests as well as long into the future.
